William Stevenson was born in the County of Armagh Ireland in 1814, and was the son of William and Anne Stevenson. William Snr listed his profession as Lieutenant 84th Foot Regiment.
We know William was previously married but don't know to whom, when or where. He fathered six children, one was deceased and his first wife died in 1854.
He was a widower and aged 41 when on the 6th of January 1855 at St Kilda he married Eleanor Southcombe Rooke, the daughter of Richard and Rebecca Rooke nee Southcombe. At the time of their marriage, William was the Hotel-Keeper at the Langford Hotel in South Yarra and Eleanor was a Teacher. They were married at her parents home. Eleanor was born in Devonshire England.
William also had a lot of land in what today is known as Mount Waverley, but seems he lost most of it by trusting the wrong people and by some bad land deals. However on his land he hand made bricks and built a church which has been added to and has since been declared an historic building and stands beside a modern church in Mount Waverley.
William and Eleanor were to have only one child as far as can be determined and that was Ellen who was born on September 19th, 1859 at Mulgrave.
It was about 17 or 18 years later that William Leighton and his brother George were to take residence at the hotel Langford where William and Ellen met and were married on the 7th of June 1877 at Fernhill Malvern.
