William Leighton, son of Robert Leighton and Elizabeth Anderson, was born 1849 or 1853 in Hull, Yorkshire, UK, died on Jul 6, 1916 in Leongatha, Victoria at age 66, and was buried in Korumburra Cemetery. The cause of his death was Fractured Tibia and Fibula, Embulism (Blood Clot) and Heart Failure.

The first we know of William being in this country is in 1877 at the Hotel Langford in South Yarra.
There were two Leighton brothers at the Hotel, William and George, although we don't know for sure how they came to be there as there are several stories.
1. they both arrived in Port Phillip from New Zealand.
2. George was already in Australia and waited for his brother to come from England.
3. that William was a "Remittance Man" which meant that his family paid him to come and stay in Australia to avoid any embarrasment in England.
However we do know that he was a Mariner, so it is possible that he worked his way here and signed off on arriving in Australia. George Edward stated once that his father "Jumped Ship". If this is the case then it will be almost impossible to trace the ship he sailed with.
It is believed that George eventually went back to England and claimed some sort of an inheritence and later it was his son that started "Leighton Homes" in England and then one of his sons, Stanley Ellis Leighton came and started the business in Australia.
William was to marry Ellen Stevenson, the daughter of the Langford Hotel-Keeper on June 7th, 1877 at Fernhill Malvern.
Although William was a Mariner on his arrival in Australia, he turned his hand to farming at Narre-Warren from 1878 to 1883 where there first three children were born. 1884 to 1895 at Bonnie Doon where their next five children were born, then he went gold mining at Gafney's Creek in 1896/7 and another child was born. In 1898 they went to Woods Point and there they had their 10th child. From there to Cranbourne in 1898 to 1900 where their last child Daisy was to be orn and to survive only one day. William's wife Ellen was to die seven months later on May 17th, 1901 and was buried at Cranbourne cemetary with her daughter Daisy.
William moved to the Korumburra area where he was married again to a widow, Jane Kelly (nee Rudd) in 1908. Jane had two young children and has been described as "The Black Widow".
Unfortunatley it was at the black coal mine in Korumburra that he was to have an accident while wearing a new pair of boots he jumped out of a coal skip and slipped and fell, breaking his leg. Although there are a couple of versions of why he did not get his leg treated immediately, but a blood clot formed and he died three days later.
