176. William Hams, son of James Hams and Mary, was born in 1805 in Folkstone, Kent, England and died on Nov 20, 1875 in Walkerville, South Australia at age 70.

Events

• Emigration: Left England for Australia on the "John Mitchell", a 3-master on 2Dec1848 and arrived in Adelaide 22Apr1849.

• Occupation: Farmer, Angaston, South Australia.

William married Susannah Spicer on Feb 1, 1825 in Godmersham, Kent, England. Susannah was born in 1801 in England and died on Jan 22, 1896 in Walkerville, South Australia at age 95.

William and Susannah Hams of Kent, England came to South Australia on the ship "John Mitchell" arriving on April 22nd 1849 with ten children. They came by way of London and Plymouth. The "John Mitchell" was a three masted ship, captained by J. Douglas.

It is interesting to speculate what William and Susannah must have thought after they had made the decision to emigrate to Australia. Glowing reports had been received from the fledgling colony of what was available there. Opportunity existed to own land, there was a healthy climate, and goldfields to explore. These were not only for themselves but for their growing family.

The free passage offered to them was very inviting. Provisions were found and there were no expenses on the voyage. Twenty cubic feet of luggage space or half a ton of goods was allocated to each family. It is almost impossible to imagine going through one's household goods and reducing the family's belongings to only half a ton! If on arrival they were not able to find employment, their immediate needs were met as they would be given work on Government projects at reduced wages.

As William would have packed his few belongings, Susannah would have had the unenviable task of packing her family's clothing. When the acceptance of emigration papers arrived there were suggestions of what clothing they needed. The decision of what clothing to keep with them must have been a difficult one as they had access to what was in the hold only once a month. The journey of three months would have taken them through all seasons as they crossed from the Northern to Southern hemisphere.

They sailed from London on 2nd December 1848. Passenger lists have been lost, but a diary of the voyage kept by a passenger is in the South Australian Archives. They arrived in Australia on April 22nd 1849, disembarking on the 23rd or 24th. All the men on the voyage were expected to help hoist sails and pump the bilges. At times they must have felt the full surge of the ship. It would have been terrifying when the waves broke over the decks even though everything was battened down.

William's job was listed as a labourer when they arrived in Australia. His first occupation here was working at Anguston on the property of T.H. Angus and later at Murray Flats. On his death certificate William is listed as being a farmer.

From the District Council of Flaxman Valley Assessment Book it is noted that on the Angus Family Tenant Farm that a William Hams held sections 478, 488 and 519. Other record books indicate that it was possible he also held allotments in their area. (author - Audrey Klingberg)
